4 Tips for Niche Writers

Anybody Can Write a Novel

Chapter 9 “Types of Writers” – Section 10 “Niche Writers”

With Links to Supplementary Material

We all prefer certain genres of writing and storytelling. For some writers, however, this preference goes beyond mere interest and becomes a specialty, a sole interest, and a experience that makes the writer an authority in the subject. The only problem with this is that niche writers often become repetitive and develop their works in a way that makes readers feel like reading one work by the author is enough to get a feel for everything they've written. Today, I'm going to give some tips for making your niche into something dynamic that keeps the interest of your readers.

Tip 1: Create foundations and rise from them.

Though I do not claim to already be any sort of top-tier expert in storytelling, the craft of writing is a niche that I have begun the journey of exploring. The guide that you are currently reading is the foundation of my study of the craft—a foundation from which I hope anybody can learn to become a good writer, and start at a common level as we continue our journey, together. Similarly, any realm of niche writing should seek to create a starting point for all readers and the author to be able to stand on common ground and then rise from there—whether it be in topics, themes, maturity, difficulty, or depth.

Tip 2: Use multiple perspectives within your writing.

Within niche writing, expertise creates a tendency to look at an issue from a singular perspective. This would be like if this writing guide were limited to people who, like me, aspire to be career novelists and how to do that. However, to gain a complete look at storytelling, you need to see the craft through the perspective of a writer as well as a reader—and also to acknowledge that storytelling as I would naturally be inclined to do it, is not the only nor the best way to do it. In order to show the strengths and flaws in every way to look at a story, I attempt to look at it from as many perspectives as I am able. If you want to look at a topic and attain true expertise, look at it from every relevant perspective—whether from the point-of-view of a protagonist, antagonist, or from the view of someone on the sidelines—and do it with respect.

Tip 3: Move forward on your journey.

Imagine if, in this guide, all I ever did was give unorganized and random tips from whatever I felt like writing that day—or if in future writing guides I simply rewrote all the same tips but with an emphasis on fantasy writing. If I did this, it truly would be the case that reading a dozen or so of my articles or only this first guide would be all you really needed to do unless you wanted to be bombarded with repeated information. This is a common problem in niche writing. Once you have created a foundation, move forward! Even in non-fiction, development of thought, learning, and a journey of understanding is vital to retaining readers and developing true expertise within your niche.

Tip 4: Work toward creating a complete picture of your topic of specialty.

My ultimate goal is to create a complete journey for writing and editing so that a person with dedication to the craft can go from Novice to Master. Obviously, that will require more learning and experience on my part, as well as many volumes to this guide on writing, but I hope to create a complete look at my niche. No matter your niche, develop a master plan—a completed place that you one day hope to bring your readers to. This place may change as you learn and develop, but the important thing is that you have a goal—an ultimate destination that you and your readers can arrive at, together. This big picture will be apparent, even in the first steps of your journey—through little details that you readers will note—and it will be the thing that creates dedication in them to stick with you until the end.
